Healthy Tips for your Thanksgiving Lunch or Dinner!

Did you know that the average person can eat 2000 calories or more during their thanksgiving lunch or dinner?!?! I know all that food is calling your name, but in order to fit in your jeans after you eat keep some small tips in mind:

Make sure that you are not going to your Thanksgiving Lunch or Dinner hungry
– have small healthy snacks throughout the day so that you aren’t overeating at one meal.

Thanksgiving is not an all you can eat meal – make sure that you remember that you will eat again. Also a lot of times people over eat because they only have this meal once a year, in order to not overeat at Thanksgiving make the sides and meal more than once a year so you won’t gorge and be miserable.

Shake off the Skin – If you want to cut calories easily eat your turkey without the skin, this is better for you and it still tastes great!

Side Dishes, watch your size!
– Even with the holidays moderation is the key… make sure that you are having smaller portions of sides. You want to be able to try different sides so having small quantities will allow you to do that very thing!

Drink plenty of water- Water makes you feel full faster and if you have water you will save calories that you would have wasted on cokes and other beverages.

Hopefully these tips will help you at your wonderful Thanksgiving meal this year!!! Have a great and Happy Thanksgiving!

Don't Get Pounds as a Gift This Year!

Do you ever feel like you gain a lot of weight during the holidays? Well the average person gains around 5-10 pounds in the months of November – January. The holidays are so easy to gain weight during, and no one wants to diet during the holidays so in order to keep your great shape for these next couple of months get on top of your game and follow these 5 easy tips:

1. Go in with a good attitude and mind set

Everyone always says that they will work off the weight as a new year’s resolution so they go into Christmas thinking that they will eat anything and everything. Not a good plan. Also many people say they aren’t go to eat any goodies and that can’t happen either. Make good choices don’t eat the whole dessert just think of the word moderation!

2. Turkeys are suppose to be stuffed, not you

At every meal aim for a comfortable feeling of satisfaction rather than getting to the stage where you need to loosen your waistband and you are miserable. Watch your calories and try to still have 6 small healthy snacks/meals so you don’t over eat at one setting.

3. Don’t give up exercise

It is hard to go to the gym at this time, but this is the perfect time to exercise. You will be with family at these times so make exercise fun, play sports, go on walks, and even have exercise competitions to play against each other and burn fat at the same time!

4. Out of Sight, Out of Mind

If you are baking a lot for the holidays or you have been given many great goodies, make sure that they are out of sight. Many times if something is out to eat people tend to eat more than if the goodies were put away out of sight.

5. It’s Christmas…. All is Calm

Try and keep calm over Christmas. As stress levels rise, so does our tendency to eat for comfort. Also remember at the end of the day that you are one person and so you need to make sure you are taking care of yourself while you are trying to make Christmas fun for everyone else. At the end of the day enjoy what you have and don’t think about what you didn’t get or get done. Instead of turning to food when you are stressed turn to a good movie, good book, a bubble bath, a walk, or something that relaxes you.

I hope that you will take what we have discussed to heart and that you will enjoy this time it only comes but once a year!!

Saving for Christmas Shopping

So its right around that time of year… time for thinking about the holidays. Since the holidays are getting closer and closer and you want to be able to purchase the perfect gifts for your friends and loved ones keep these two tips in mind:

1) Start Saving – Since the holidays are an expensive time start planning ahead. Set aside money in an envelope or account every week so by the time you go shopping you will have extra money that is planned out for the holidays.
2) Discounts & Savings – Why start your shopping in December? Try to find sales earlier in the year and save them for Christmas. This way you are not stressed closer to the holidays and you will have the gifts that you wanted to buy for a cheaper price.

In all enjoy this time of year and make sure that you are eliminating your stress in every way possible! Remember this is the most wonderful time of the year!!!

Halloween - Great Safety Tips

Halloween is tomorrow and here are some helpful, great tips to do before your night of fun:

1) Costumes- Make sure that your costume is comfortable. You want to enjoy the night and not be miserable in your attire. Also make sure that your costume will be seen when it gets dark. Cars are watching out for trick or treaters but if you can help them by having a flashing light or by wearing bright colors that way you are more likely to be seen.

2) Jack-O-Lanterns – If you have carved a pumpkin outside your house and it has a candle in it, make sure that you move away from the lantern when you are taking pictures so you don’t accidently catch your costume on fire.

3) Props- Make sure that if you are carrying a prop with you that goes with your costume that it doesn’t have an hard edges, you want to make sure your prop is smooth and flexible to make sure that if you fall on the object it won’t cause damage.

4) Before Trick or Treating – Make sure that you have a good and healthy meal before you go out for trick or treating. That way you won’t get hungry while you are out and you won’t get a tummy ache by eating too much candy.

5) Watch Out- Remember that you must look both ways to cross the street. Stay on the sidewalk, and ALWAYS go with someone, never trick or treat without being in a group with at least one adult. Always have a phone with you at all times, and make sure that you are home by 10, you should have enough candy at that time.

6) Candy – Make sure when you get home to check ALL candy. Never eat or keep candy that is unwrapped or open. If it doesn’t look right, DON’T try it!

Hopefully these tips will help you have a fun and safe Halloween! Have a great time!!!

Pumpkins with Warts!! Why???

Do you ever look at pumpkins this time of year and ask yourself the question, why are some smooth and why do some have warts? I have always wondered why pumpkins have warts and you know why that is??? Because the bumps on pumpkins are sometimes called "sugar warts," because they're caused by a buildup of sugars under the skin.

Hmm... you learn something new EVERYDAY!

Happy October!

Kick it FALL Style - Carve a Pumpkin

What to do a great activity for this fall… carve a pumpkin. Sounds easy enough, but if you have never carved a pumpkin before it would be hard. In order to have a great time and have a remarkable pumpkin here are some helpful steps:

Step 1: Find a pumpkin with a smooth face… the smoother the face the easier it will be to carve

Step 2: Cut the top or the bottom off of the pumpkin. If you cut the bottom off it can help with placing a light in the candle when the pumpkin is complete.

Step 3: CLEAN IT OUT… you have to know get in and get your hands dirty… you want to make sure that you pull out all of the gooey slime and seed. It doesn’t have to be completely perfect just as long as it’s clean.

Step 4: Now create the pumpkin of your dreams… you can use stencils to make it perfect or you can free hand your drawing to create your masterpiece.

Step 5: Now that you have your drawing complete you what to cut out the shapes or design for the perfect carved pumpkin. Make sure that you are careful with the knifes that you use to not harm you or your friends.

Step 6: Now that the pumpkin is complete, put a light in the pumpkin and display for the entire world to see! Have fun and enjoy your fall creation!!

Childhood Memories

Think about you best days as a child and the memories that you cherish. What did you like doing as a kid…. Did you like to dress up and play with dolls? Did you like to play outside and in tree houses? Did you ride bikes? Did you finger paint or draw with chalk? Did you watch TGIF with the great shows like Full House, Boy Meets World, Step by Step, Family Matters? Did you wake up on Saturdays to great shows like Saved by the Bell & California Dreams? Did you watch cartoons? Did you go bowling or mini golfing? Look back and think about what your favorite childhood memories were and try to relive one today. Wake up on Saturday morning and watch cartoons, play outside riding a bike or have a baseball game, play a game of horse or pig, go bowling or get a group together to do bumper boats. Do something today that makes you happy and let the child inside of you relive some great years of your childhood.

9/11

Do you remember where you were on September 11, 2001? Do you remember what you were doing? Do you remember how you felt? I bet that if you were old enough you can answer yes to all of those questions. If you weren’t old enough to remember what you were doing its okay as long as we never forget what happened. Many Americans woke up that morning kissed there family good-bye and went to work or went on a plane to never return again. Many families are missing their mom, dad, daughter, son, or even grandchild because of a horrible terrorist attack. Many heroes risked their lives to save others in the towers some returning, some to never serve again. As you go on today, may you remember the men and women who were victims of 9/11/01, and say a pray for the family members that will never be the same since that day.

Ten Years From Now

Someone always asks: where will you be ten years from now? I think that we all try to picture our lives where we will be ten years from that present moment. I say why don’t we do more than that? Instead of saying I would like to have two degrees and a dog, let’s do it. If you want to graduate with two degrees in ten years start doing little things today to get there. I know we all want a genie in a bottle to grant our wishes but that is never going to happen. In order to accomplish what you would like to have in the future make daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals. That way you can mark off what you have accomplished and you might be able to achieve what you set your mind to before the due date!

Money, Money, Money - SaViNgS!

Do you even wish that you had more money???? I know I do. I have a challenge for you. In order for you to have money in the long run, why not save money today for your future? I know that it is hard with this economy to save money when you want to shop, you have to pay for things, or whatever but I have a challenge for you. Every pay check put 10% back into savings. Within a year you will have lots more money in savings for your future.

If you can’t put 10% back try something new. Make a goal to find at least one penny a day; by the end of the year you will at least have an extra $3.65.

The weekend is approaching so keep this in mind this weekend!

Instead of doing the same thing this weekend……jazz it up! Have a slumber party, play your favorite board games that you haven’t played in a while, get a group of people together and go play kick ball or try roller skating. Get with your BFFs and make a new club, create shirts to go along with the theme, and then do something fun and different. It will be worth the time spent and you will bond over that time while creating a memory.

Peer Pressure

In everyday situations you are going to come into contact with decisions. Decisions to follow the crowd and make a choice that could harm you, harm others, ruin a reputation, make you sad, or even let down your parents, family, and friends. Strive to be different. Though you think that you might be the only one that feels like you are not following the crowd …… You AREN’T the only one. It will be hard to stand alone but in the end it will be a decision that you were glad you didn’t make. Make sure that you are true to yourself! The crowd that may want you to partake in peer pressure is probably not going to be your best friends or the crowd you hang out with or want to hang out with in a couple of years anyway. So be strong, be bold, be YOU!

Do you ever stop to think, who am I? When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see someone who is like his or her favorite actor, best friend or singer? Or do you see someone who is unique, special, and truly one of a kind?

STAND OUT... be proud of who you are. You were made the way you are for a reason. You have your own talents, abilities, and strengths. There is no one like you... DON'T TRY TO BE ANYONE BUT YOURSELF!
